Update- Blog Post #10

My main actress is my best friend Alessandra Pizzi and it works out perfectly because she has a background with acting and singing so I am so excited to start working with her on this film opening!!
I met up with her during this weekend and talked to her about my ideas and how I am going to bring them to life and she is very excited to get started.
We set up dates to start the filming process.
For the opening scene I wanted flashing lights to be on while the girls are drinking to bring the situation more to life. Therefore I decided to go out and buy the light and it is perfect, it changes colors and everything.

Editing Ideas- Blog Post #9

Here are some techniques I am going to try out in my film opening

Cross-Cutting- an editing technique most often used in films to establish action occurring at the same time, and usually in the same place. In a cross-cut, the camera will cut away from one action to another action, which can suggest the simultaneity of these two actions but this is not always the case.
I plan to use this while the boyfriend is on the phone and when the girlfriend is getting kidnapped. I have never edited anything like this so I am excited to give it a try.

I also want to add a filter to the film opening to make the film seem more from the year I am shooting for however I am going to have to look up how to do that because the only thing I know how to edit are pictures.

I am thinking a filter like this one. I would not do it as heavy because I do not want the film to be too edited and hard to watch but I love how the colors look with this filter. Hopefully I am able to find a filter similar to this one for videos.

Story Board Basics- Blog Post #8

I am having a hard time deciding what to do to make sure my film opening does not look like a trailer/montage. Here is what I have come up for the storyboard so far...
1) 2 girls gossiping in a room with lights and music playing in the back. They are also drinking
2) They talk about one of their boyfriends and she finds out he has been cheating on her
3) Later on in the night the crazy girl kidnaps the other girl
4) The boyfriend starts calling her freaking out

That is the basics of the story line, I have been having a hard time thinking of new ideas lately but soon I will be back on my roll and figure everything out.

Music- Blog Post #7

Music

For the music in my film opening I am thinking about only having music during the first opening scene and the credits because I do not want the film opening to feel like a trailer. Since my story line is about kidnapping I have decided to use a creepy song to go with it. I did some research on kidnapping movies and looked up the soundtrack used for each film and here is what I found.

Kidnap (2017)

Soundtrack: Relentless- Baraka May, Danny Jay & The Pimpampums
Gumbo Mambo – Adrian Foulkes, Santiago Rapallo & David Herrington
Come, Jambaboo With Me! – Adrian Foulkes, Alex Foulkes, Santi Ibarretxe, Santiago Rapallo & David Herrington
Purple Butterflies – Metronome MP

Out of those songs I would like to pick a song for my film opening similar to Relentless because it gives me creepy vibes.

Research- Blog Post #6

Research

I conducted some research on horror films and even referenced back to my last blog post on horror movies to find out what techniques to use for the production of a horror film. Here are some links to the websites that helped me. I cannot wait to use these techniques and ideas in my own film opening and bring my ideas to life!

Costume Design- Blog Post #5

Costume Design

I have decided to make my film opening inspired by the 90's and to make this clear I will portray the time era within the costumes. In the 90's there was a lot of plaid, belts, and denim on denim so for the girl actresses I will be sure to incorporate that. This time in fashion has been coming back these past years and I actually own outfits that look just like the ones below.

Group Meeting- Blog Post #4

Group Meeting!!

In class we met up with other people to bounce our ideas off of and to get new ideas. I told them about how I was going to do comedy then decided to switch to horror and they thought that's a good idea because you can do more with horror. I told them how I was not sure what kind of horror I wanted the film opening to be, either a kidnapping or a torture so we found a way to mix both together. The film opening is going to start out with a black screen and a phone call then a split screen of the abduction and the boyfriend looking for her. The plot is that the guys ex girlfriend is jealous of his new one so she abducts her.

Genre Dilemma- Blog Post #3

Genre Dilemma

I have reached a dilemma, comedy was my first pick but I thought about the factors that go into a comedy film and the factors that go into a horror film and I have come to the conclusion that I should do a horror film opening. This is very exciting because originally I was going to choose this genre however I went with comedy but I came back to my senses. I am starting to think of ideas for my story board. I don’t know if I want this film opening to take place in a house or in the woods, a house would be more practical and easier for shooting. Although, the woods would be more exciting and it does go along with the common setting of a horror movie. Maybe I could incorporate both...

Introducing Me- Blog Post #2

Introducing Me!

My name is Hailey Goff and this blog is where I post about my interest and research I have done on genres and media. I will be using this blog to post my ideas when it comes to the film opening and my journey on bringing my ideas to life. My film opening will as of now be a comedy and I have a lot of research to do to figure out all of the details like the lighting, the camera angles, the color scheme and sound effects.

Genre- Blog Post #1

Genre for film opening

For my film opening I am thinking about using comedy as my genre. At first I was thinking horror because that's my favorite genre but I decided to step out of the box and do comedy. A comedy movie is professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches, intended to make an audience laugh. I did research on the types of shots to use while creating a comedy film and one is to have things enter the frame in a weird way, matching scene transitions, perfectly timed sound effects, and super dramatic lighting. I will be sure to include some of those techniques in my film opening.

Music Marketing Campaign

Music Marketing Campaign

  1. In this music marketing campaign my team and I worked together to put together marketing strategies and conduct research to help market a new band or artist. My team members Katalina Enriquez, Josh Keller and I created a band named In Debt which is an indie rock band. We created a website and many social medias to reach our target audience. We then took many other steps to get out band In Debt out there and expand our target audience.
  2. My team and I conducted our research on two bands similar to ours in order to get an idea of what bands in our genre and doing to get well known and be successful. The bands we chose to research were Imagine Dragons and Pearl Jam. For both bands, they had a huge social media presence and used that to their advantage. Both bands had a website and created merchandise for their fans. Pearl Jam Marketed their brand through their film Pearl Jam Twenty - The Film and They have their own radio station which they use to distribute their productions. Imagine Dragons has a website which allows fans to buy official merch and buy their deluxe album. The website also contains advertising for their vinyl album.Latest news about the band is shown through their website. We used this research to put together our marketing plan. Since both Pearl Jam and Imagine Dragons had great social media interaction and a website we decided to do the same.
  3. For our band In Debt we created an instagram, twitter, and website. We used all platforms in a different way in order to keep the fans informed at all times and also give the fans a reason to follow all of the accounts. On instagram we Used the platform to market and share information, Most big announcements were through this app. And this app targeted our younger target audience. On twitter we posted Important news, promos of a new song to the audience, Personal contact with fans, updates from the studio when recording, and regular day-to-day work news. Twitter was for our older target audience. For our website we posted a short bio that describes the band and how it came to be, created merchandise, posted tour dates, included pictures of the band, and had the album with the link to buy it on. We also linked all of our social medias on the website. We created a youtube to post our music videos and vlogs because our target audience is extremely into watching peoples day to day lives.
Examples:

d. During this project I learned a lot about the marketing of bands and and target audiences are a huge deal when it comes to marketing a band. It was hard at first coming up with ways to market a completely new band but with time the process became a lot easier. The research was the most important part of this project, that is how we learned more about our genre and how other bands in the same genre became successful. Over all the music marketing campaign project was a great experience and helped build my knowledge for the portfolio project.

Group Issue Representation Blog Post

A group that I would like to discuss are transgender people. Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex. Transgender people are sometimes called transsexual if they desire medical assistance to transition from one sex to another. This group of people are represented through many magazines, protests and short films. Contrasting there are way more people in which who are against the rights for transgender people. There is a case called such Fields v. Smith which has helped to make progress for the transgender rights movement. This case helped defined medical necessity of treatment as being the individuals choice. I feel that the representation through the media about trans people are fair if they are positive on the other hand I do not agree with the media that is against the whole process. I believe everyone should have the right to be the gender they feel they are inside. No harm is done to others while others are transitioning.
I would retain the representation characteristics that are positive like movies that support them and articles. I would challenge the media that is against transgender people that create negative media products such as articles against transgender people.

Comedy Research Blog-Hailey Goff

Comedy

Genre conventions – content

The setting of a comedy film depends on the specific movie but usually the film takes place in bright places, towns, cities, and well populated areas. Teen comedies are often in high schools or small towns while social comedies take places in bars or a home. Comedies are based on bright colors like blue, green, and yellow. Lighting is usually bright also these films usually go throughout one day or day to night, making it clear to the audience. The character development throughout comedy movies are typically idiots, blonde, clumsy, very social people who talk a lot which creates humor or regular people with sarcastic moments. The makeup that's shown in comedy films is also usually more clean and colourful as opposed to the gritty, darker coloured makeup. This make-up technique is also used to set the tone of the film, making it seem more light hearted and positive. There are often two main characters in which one of them “the sidekick” will add comic relief to the film. The narrative of these films are often multi-strand which is several storylines going on at the same time. Comedy themes are often Gross-out, anarchic comedy, parody, romantic comedy, Screwball comedy, and slapstick. Satire is often used in these film, Satire works to mock and attack another person.

Genre Conventions- production techniques

Production techniques in the comedy genre of films are very specific. To start, the camera angles are close-ups to capture characters expressions, mid shot to capture stance and background, long shots focus on location of the characters which may be of importance to the plot, a zoom between shots can be used in humour, such as long shot to close-up showing a characters responding expression, or a close-up to long shot to reveal odd location or costume. For the editing process, these movies are often made with fast cut editing. Usually no special effects are used because these films typically take place in a real life situation. The sound used in comedy films are upbeat and happy because these movies are made to make the audience happy and laugh. A deliberate wrong choice of music genre for a scene could also be used to create a comedy moment. There may also be some use of slapstick sound effects when someone is injured.
